Celtic 2 - 0 Hibernian

May 12, 2008

Celtic FCCeltic did what they had to do on Sunday and reinforced their lead at the top of the SPL at comfortably beating Hibernian at Parkhead.

Goals from Stephen McManus and Scotlands top scorer this season, Scott McDonald, secured the three points for Gordon Strachan’s team. Celtic now have to watch and wait as Rangers play their two league games against Motherwell and St Mirren before the final game of the season on the 22nd.

This result ensures that Motherwell take the third spot and European Football next season. It should also give some comfort to Rangers fans to know that with European qualification assured, Motherwell only have pride to play for. In what could be an exciting end of season decider, here’s a possible scenario:

Rangers beat Motherwell (likely) and St Mirren (certainty). They’ll be on 88 points, 2 ahead of Celtic going into the final game. For Celtic to win the league, they’d have to beat Dundee United at Parkhead and hope Rangers lose to Aberdeen or draw (providing the goal difference remains the same).

All Rangers need to do is keep winning and hope the Uefa Cup Final doesn’t result in too many injuries and that they dont slip up against Motherwell or St Mirren. Stranger things happen at sea, but whatever happens, I want Celtic to beat United on the 22nd to set up a gala day for Scottish football.
